Matthew House Ottawa (MHO) was founded in 2010 to support refugee claimants who arrive in Ottawa without the benefit of sponsorship by providing shelter, food, and settlement assistance in a family atmosphere through its Refugee Services program. MHO currently has 13 homes (3 reception houses and 10 transition houses) able to serve more than 150+ refugee claimants per year. Residents arrive at MHO from 50+ countries, predominately from Sub-Saharan Africa.
In 2012, MHO assumed operation of Furniture Bank of Ottawa to address furniture poverty by accepting and redistributing gently-used furniture and household items to diverse individuals and families referred by the City of Ottawa and 50+ social service agencies. Referrals include refugees and other newcomers, people with physical and/or mental health disabilities, women fleeing violence, youth aging out of foster care, Indigenous people, LGBTQ+, and families moving out of homeless shelters. The Furniture Bank program furnishes 1100+ homes each year, serving more than 3000 people.
