The City of Ottawa has received a revised site plan application proposing a new design for the rear addition to the Château Laurier hotel. The new design is the result of settlement reached between the owner, Larco Investments Inc., and Heritage Ottawa following legal challenges of the earlier proposal.
The addition will add 159 hotel rooms, meeting rooms, an associated lobby area and an underground parking garage with 301 parking spaces to the existing hotel.
The development proposal retains the hotel in its entirety, and the addition will be built on the site of the former parking garage. It consists of ten- and eleven-storey pavilions with a two-storey connector in between. The addition will connect to limited areas on the Château Laurier’s east and west wings. Exterior materials will be limestone, bronze and glass.
The development proposal also includes a landscaped courtyard between the Château Laurier and the proposed addition, a redesigned forecourt along Mackenzie Avenue, a walkway and ramp along the north side of the addition, and a new stairway between the courtyard and the public terrace on the west side of the Rideau Canal.

The Urban Design Review Committee will provide urban design advice and input on this new design. Built Heritage Sub-Committee will consider a staff report for the heritage permit.Planning Committee will consider staff reports for both the heritage permit and site plan control application. City Council will make a decision on the heritage permit. These meetings are expected in Winter 2021.
