As of early March 2016, the City of Ottawa has resumed construction on Main Street. This work is being conducted to renew infrastructure such as watermains and storm sewers, sidewalks and street lights as well as improving transportation for all modes in your community.
WHO: The City of Ottawa has hired the Contractor, Karson Konstruction, to complete the work.
WHY: The existing street infrastructure has reached the end of its life-cycle and the City has identified the need for reconstruction. Main Street will be renewed as a “complete street” featuring cycle tracks, wider sidewalks, on-street parking and space for streetscaping.
WHAT: The construction work will renew infrastructure in your neighbourhood. Specifically, the works proposed include the introduction, rehabilitation and/or replacement of:
Sidewalks, cycling facilities, and transit facilities;
Street amenities including landscaping and public art;
Street lighting and signage;
Watermains, sanitary and storm sewers;
Lateral services to the property line;
Utility reconstruction as required;
Traffic control signal system; and
Road structure and pavement.
WHEN: This work is on-going and final completion is anticipated for the summer of 2017.
WHERE: Construction will take place on the following streets:
Main Street – Echo Drive to the Rideau River
Rideau River Drive – Main Street to 130m south of Main Street
The northbound lane closure on Main Street, from Clegg Street to Lees Avenue, will remain in effect until September 2016 to allow for the completion of constructed related activities at the Northern end of Main Street.
Beginning on May 2, the Main Street northbound lane from Riverdale Avenue to Clegg Street will also be closed to traffic until November 2016.
Northbound traffic will continue to be detoured via Riverside Drive, Bank Street and Isabella Street. As a result of the northbound lane closure north of Riverdale Avenue, OC Transpo routes 5 and 16, serving the Old Ottawa East community, will be detoured from Main Street via Elliot Avenue to Marlowe Crescent then on to Clegg Street and back to Main Street. Until the northbound lane along Main Street north of Clegg Street is re-opened to traffic (see above), OC Transpo routes 5 and 16, serving the Old Ottawa East community, will continue to run along Clegg Street to Colonel By Drive then on to Hawthorne (regular Route 5) and back to Main Street (for Route 16).
Information on the traffic management plan and associated detours (and duration) can be found at http://ottawa.ca/en/city-hall/planning-and-development/main-street-renewal
